🎵 My Brother’s New Music, Makin’ Chains, is Honest and Deep

There’s something thrilling about watching a musician with a dream as he carves out his new path in real-time. As his big sister, I’m super proud of Shayne’s achievements so far, and I know there are plenty more in the future. As a writer, I know the emotional labor that goes into crafting words from the depths of your soul, and with the deep truths presented in this latest release, I know my brother put it all out there.
It’s not common to present something so gritty and raw as only a second release, but with this one, Shayne is building a momentum even I didn’t expect. He put in the studio hours and put out the heart and soul that will prove to the world he’s not afraid to tackle heavy, complex human stories.
Shayne’s latest single, “Makin’ Chains” does exactly that.
If you are expecting the bright, melodic energy of his first release, “Savage Grace,” prepare yourself for a deliberate shift to something much darker, grittier, and cinematically truthful. “Makin’ Chains” is a bit harder for me to write about. It’s not meant to make you feel comfortable; rather it’s an intense, unflinching look at generational patterns, anger, and the harsh cycles we create when pain is passed down as an inheritance.
The track itself is a bluesy rock with the guitar and vocals sounding like a weight being dragged across a hard floor. Shayne sings about the painful links forged into an ever-growing, weighted chain on our lives. He paints a detailed picture of the forger of that weight wanting to be free of it, and he sings a raspy whisper of the solution found in the Light.
But he doesn’t take the listener to the breakthrough in this song. That’s kind of hard for me, but I also know it takes some serious artistic bravery to drop a song that leaves you uncomfortable. It’s a mature stance to step away from the easy and catchy lines and deal with something so tragic and real. It’s genuine storytelling without holding back. I need to learn from my little brother. 😊 Knowing Shayne, though, I’m hoping he’s got a future track prepared where the story moves into that Light he whispers about in “Makin’ Chains.”
To feel the heavy and authentic atmosphere he’s built with this track, you can watch the official video below.

Prompt Response; Peppermint

What’s the first book you ever finished and still remember to this day?
This prompt got me thinking about all the books I’d started but never did finish, like Watership Down, The Martian Chronicles, and A Wrinkle in Time. Well, I did finish the last one as an adult, but I never could get most books finished before time to return them to the library.
Of course, I had all my little books for small hands, and then the books with matching records that played a little sound when it was time to turn the page. I’m sure some were by Disney, and some were probably by Dr. Seuss. I’m certain I had “Put Me in the Zoo” because I remember how the main character could put his colored spots on other things, but it doesn’t have a stickiness in my brain like the one that goes with the picture above.
The first small book I finished that stuck with me, and is still with me to this day, is probably Peppermint by Dorothy Grider. My mind captured the images so well that, when I needed Gemini to find the book for me, it got it right on the first try. Though there are none available at the sale page on Thriftbooks, there are 45 people signed up to be notified if it ever shows up there, so apparently, I’m not the only one who remembers it as a wonderful story.
See, there was a candy store, and the owner had a cat named “Candy” who stayed at the store with him. Candy had 4 kittens, so the owner gave them sweet candy names like Lollipop and posted them for sale. But the runt of the litter, a tiny white kitten he called Peppermint, was too shy and too small, so she stayed at Mr. Dobby’s candy store. Until one day, a little girl named Barbara was upset and crying because she didn’t have a kitten for the upcoming cat show at school.
When Mr. Dobby said Barbara could take Peppermint home, she didn’t care how dirty she was from all the dust in the storeroom. But Barbara’s mom cared and insisted the kitten must have a bath. Peppermint didn’t like it and jumped out of the soapy water and right into a bucket of water filled with bluing. (In case you’ve never heard of bluing, it’s a laundry additive that removes yellow discolorations to make whites brighter. You can read about it on Amazon at https://amzn.to/4eegCjR {my affiliate link for tracking} if you want to know more.) The clean little kitten was now a beautiful blue, and when Barbara took it to school with the pink ribbon her mother tied around it, the other kids decided that Peppermint was a prize-worthy kitty.
I think I remember it because of my own dreams of being—or sharing— something that could win a prize. I could identify with both Peppermint and Barbara on the rejection front, and I always hoped to have a special moment like she did when she pulled the kitten out of the basket. (Part of me still hopes for something like that when I finally release one of my songs. 😁) It’s just such a happy ending for everyone in this book.
And, guess what? I even found a few places on YouTube where people read the book aloud and show the pictures on the pages. Some were a little long, so I’m embedding the shortest one that is also easy to hear and understand. It’s only 5 minutes and 37 seconds to find out the names of the other kittens and see the artist’s drawings of the little blue kitten.

I Love 💕 Cauliflower Crust Pizza 🍕

How do you get older than 60 and finally try your first cauliflower crust pizza? By thinking they might come out something like this picture. Lol 🤣 I mean, I really like cauliflower, but I couldn’t picture it laying on a pizza tray with toppings that would stay in place.
But I wanted to spend some time with a nephew and his son and share some cool coloring books created by a Christian writer friend, so I found a pizza place that made salads, and that was totally my intention for dinner. Instead, I saw the availability of the cauliflower crust and feta cheese, and I decided to try it. They let me choose up to 8 toppings, so I added chicken, bacon, basil, tomato, green peppers, and onion. Here’s a close up of what it looks like in a real image…

I don’t know if that does it justice, but I do know the flavor has made it one of my favorite thin crust pizzas ever. And because of my cow dairy sensitivity, the restaurant informed me that they even made sure to use all clean utensils and prep areas to avoid any cross contamination. I’m so impressed, and other than the bacon, I feel like it was a more healthy meal for me as well. If you’re ever near a place called “Craft House Pizza,” I would highly recommend a visit. Wherever you go and can find this type of crust, give it a try and let me know what you think.
Oh, and for those of you who like to try new and creative pizzas, hubby was really impressed with their pickle pizza. That’s why you see pickles in the AI image at the top of this post. The heart-shaped cauliflower is for sticking to my February theme, of course, but it also represents the non-wheat crust as maybe a little better for the heart.❤️🩹
I’ll end with a simple reminder that our physical heart is only one part of the wondrous way we’ve been created by Our Loving Father, Abba Yahveh. King David realized we are both fearfully and wonderfully made. And his son, Solomon, passed along this wisdom…
