Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in?
As October comes to an end and November begins, we move from autumn beauty to the festive season of lights and decorations. My plans for posts in November include recipes for home, life, and kitchen. I figured the latest release by my brother would be the perfect crossover event.
So first, about prompt 2923 by Day One, they might be thinking of a book with a fictionally-built world that covers the entire story. But I’m thinking of a non-fiction book with multiple real worlds given for both warning and hope. The warning is for the absolute worst world to live in: the “second death” of an eternity without God or any aspects of His character. Also known as Hell, it would be a world with no hope, no kindness, no peace, no joy, no beauty, and—the very worst part—NO LOVE. Yikes! Who could actually want to spend eternity there if they really thought about it?
But, there is someone who is headed that way and doesn’t want to be alone. That someone is called Hasatan or “the adversary” and he hates anyone who resembles his enemy Yahveh Almighty. Since we are made in God’s image, that includes us whether we are serving God or not. And this leads to my first recipe: the ingredients to fight the adversary and know you can win because of Who is truly fighting that battle for you are loudly proclaimed with a great southern rock sound in my brother’s latest release… Won’t Be Shaken. Have a listen:
I got to hear it a month ago, but couldn’t say anything. And it’s one of those that just keeps working on your spirit. I wrestled with the idea of having to speak to the adversary (though I’ve had to at times) because of where the Bible says not to rejoice that we have power over the enemy. But I woke up one morning realizing that this song is more about realizing where your feet are planted (on The Rock) to remind you that you have Christ’s power to not be shaken. Here are a few verses this song brings to mind:
“[8] Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. [9] Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.”
And this is the one I referred to as I wrestled with accepting the power declared in this song:
[17] The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
[19] “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you. [20] Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Now, look at verse 18 (that I purposely left out above) as it brings in the context of verse 19:
“[18] So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. [19] Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you. ”
And Shayne put that into the song! We simply must keep the cart behind the horse and remember Who threw the adversary down, and Who’s Holy Blood paid for the victory and authority we now share. Paul reminds the believers at Ephesus this way:
“[10] Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. [11] Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. ”
And sometimes we do have to speak to an adversary and proclaim the authority and victory we have in The Lord. Before he was king, the young shepherd David stood before a giant adversary and proclaimed:
“[47] And all those assembled here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
So any song that can pull in this much of a Scriptural foundation is a winner in my book. This song is a winning recipe of strength mixed with hope for those who have chosen to give their hearts to Messiah YahShua HaMashiach (Jesus The Christ) and let Him put their feet on The Rock. This IS the recipe you’ll need to spend eternity with The One who loves you so much that He provided a way out and beyond in The Blood shed on the cross at Calvary. Won’t you join me (and Shayne) on that Rock today?

To Joke or Not to Joke
Remember those classic funny-book-title jokes from childhood? 50 Yards to the Outhouse by Willy Make-it, Ten Yards to Go by Betty Won’t, or French Cooking by Sue Flay. Every time I see today’s cliché, I think about the funny book title of You Are What You Eat co-authored by Frank Furter and Patty Melt. 🤣
Jokes aside, we have all heard that warning since childhood. Usually, it gets tossed around when someone reaches for a second slice of cake or trades a fresh salad for a double cheeseburger. The physical truth is undeniable—the fuel we put into our bodies directly dictates our physical health, cellular energy, and daily vitality. As Christian believers, it also plays a part in how our temples (of the Holy Spirit) react when we need them to be strong for worship or working for The Lord.

Not Easy to Break the Comfort Molds
If you’re like me, most of your life took this advice lightly. But as I age, I start wishing I’d have applied it more when I was younger (and thinner). But the platitude Better Late than Never applies well here as it’s never too late to substitute at least one order of fries for some grilled zucchini.
A friend recently mentioned how those deep-fried or sweet foods that presented comfort in our youth are even harder to break away from when our brains associate them with comfort. But I recently learned that oils used for deep frying (typically seed oils like soy because of their higher smoke point) are prepared in ways I’m not super comfortable with continuing to put in my body. That makes it easier to turn down the desire for comfort and turn up the desire to feel better. Feeding the Five Senses
But limiting this concept to what sits on our dinner plates misses a much broader reality. Consumption is not just about calories, vitamins and good and bad fats. We are constantly “eating” through all of our five senses every single day:
- Sight: The visuals, news feeds, and endless digital screens we gaze upon.
- Touch: The tactile comfort of our spaces.
- Taste: The simple flavors we savor.
- Smell: The familiar aromas that stir desires and memories.
- Sound: The conversations, messages, and background frequencies we let into our minds.
Just like a steady diet of junk food leaves the body sluggish, a constant intake of cynical news, gossip, and negativity will leave the mind and spirit completely exhausted. Everything we absorb through our eyes and ears acts like paint and wallpaper on the temple we live in. What goes inside is ultimately what radiates on the outside.
Nourishment for the Ears: Saved By His Scars
Just as balanced nutrition fuels physical strength, intentional listening feeds the soul. Uplifting music and truth-filled lyrics have an immediate way of shifting our perspective, easing stress, and pointing our focus back to what truly matters.
And speaking of fresh spiritual and auditory nutrition, my brother Shayne Savage just released a brand-new single today titled “Saved By His Scars.” This one has some genuinely strong heavy metal riffs and a fantastic set of lyrics. It’s part testimony and all hope. I’m so honored to share another of my brother’s quality songs. They make my big-sister heart just brim with joy. 🎵 My Brother’s New Music, Makin’ Chains, is Honest and Deep
There’s something thrilling about watching a musician with a dream as he carves out his new path in real-time. As his big sister, I’m super proud of Shayne’s achievements so far, and I know there are plenty more in the future. As a writer, I know the emotional labor that goes into crafting words from the depths of your soul, and with the deep truths presented in this latest release, I know my brother put it all out there.
It’s not common to present something so gritty and raw as only a second release, but with this one, Shayne is building a momentum even I didn’t expect. He put in the studio hours and put out the heart and soul that will prove to the world he’s not afraid to tackle heavy, complex human stories.
Shayne’s latest single, “Makin’ Chains” does exactly that.
If you are expecting the bright, melodic energy of his first release, “Savage Grace,” prepare yourself for a deliberate shift to something much darker, grittier, and cinematically truthful. “Makin’ Chains” is a bit harder for me to write about. It’s not meant to make you feel comfortable; rather it’s an intense, unflinching look at generational patterns, anger, and the harsh cycles we create when pain is passed down as an inheritance.
The track itself is a bluesy rock with the guitar and vocals sounding like a weight being dragged across a hard floor. Shayne sings about the painful links forged into an ever-growing, weighted chain on our lives. He paints a detailed picture of the forger of that weight wanting to be free of it, and he sings a raspy whisper of the solution found in the Light.
But he doesn’t take the listener to the breakthrough in this song. That’s kind of hard for me, but I also know it takes some serious artistic bravery to drop a song that leaves you uncomfortable. It’s a mature stance to step away from the easy and catchy lines and deal with something so tragic and real. It’s genuine storytelling without holding back. I need to learn from my little brother. 😊 Knowing Shayne, though, I’m hoping he’s got a future track prepared where the story moves into that Light he whispers about in “Makin’ Chains.”

That busy day today kept me out very late & set me up for more busyness tomorrow, so I ran by my brother’s Facebook music page and found that he’d created a new video with cool scenes that match his lyrics. He’s also added a unique slideshow of lyrics that pop, fade, and spin in with the lyrics.
Though he got over 4000 streams in the first month of release, the message in the song is still needed to let people know that God is still reaching out and rescuing all who call on Him. As I said in my original post on my X, “God Himself is not a savage, but to plunge a strong arm into the miry clay to dig us out of our sin, it can take a #SavageGrace.”
