🎵Prompt Response: Sentimental Much?

What’s one thing you own that holds deep sentimental value?

I’m most certainly sentimental about at least one thing every day. And asking me to come up with only one thing definitely made this post more difficult because almost everything has a story. But what a pleasure to share this one even though it breaks away from my October leaves. 🍁

This story goes way back to when I was ten weeks old, and my parents moved from Ohio to California. I had never got to meet my dad’s mom or other relatives on his side, and then I got the job with Parkway. The travels with that sales job really brought a lot of blessings into my life, including seeing my dad again as an adult on my own. We hadn’t seen each other since I was fourteen, and that apparently ran in the family because he hadn’t seen his own mother for many years either.

In November of 1990, Parkway had me near Hicksville, Ohio, where I was supposed to be born. I took the opportunity to look up my grandmother in a nearby town, and I’ll never forget her response. When I stood at the door and introduced myself, the first thing she did was to hold her hands about 18 inches apart and look at them, then back at me, then back at her hands. She finally said something like, “The last time I saw you, you were about this big.” 🤱🏽😁💓

We had a short but wonderful visit, and we made plans for the next week to spend Thanksgiving together. That was a day of feasting on memories and stories and even some home movies of when my mom and dad got married. What a pleasant day it was for both of us. She shared many of the crochet projects she was working on, and I was super impressed by her craftiness and talent. And, the next week, I was even able to convince her to come to our photographer and get some pictures taken with me and by herself to send to her family members.

By the next year, I was married and living in Kentucky. It was close enough for another visit with bringing my husband to meet her and some other relatives. At the end of that visit, I left with the beautiful crocheted dolls in the picture above. They stayed packed away for their first twenty or so years until we moved to Indiana, and the friend from whom we bought our house gifted us my first ever wooden hutch display cabinet. This gift from my Grandma got the top shelf and has been there ever since.

And since we journeyed down a bit of my memory lane today, it seems fitting to end with a song from an album my mom had during my years at home; Sentimental Journey by Steve and Eydie:
