What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve ever been part of?
Yes, this story is true. And, yes, it is funny! 🤣😂
See, I spent many years in Northern Arizona where it’s very hot in the summer, but (say it with me), “It’s a dry heat.” Really, unless you are on the backside of the desert between Needles, California and Bullhead City, Arizona on a day when the temperature hits 115°F, it is often more bearable than the extremely humid days during a Midwest summer heat wave.
We got married in early April, so when the summer rolled around in that same year, I experienced a completely different atmosphere in Kentucky. It wasn’t just hot; it was like a sauna in the middle of a steam room! 😮
That’s when the love of my life, who I trusted with every part of me, showed his “genuine” compassion and told me how some people who move from a dry climate to a humid place like Kentucky may have to get their lungs suctioned out.
I’m not naive about a lot of things, and I’m always trying to learn new stuff, but it didn’t seem that impossible to me since just 3 years previous to that moment, my grandmother needed her lungs suctioned because of her battle with cancer. Plus, there was no Internet to search and verify things with in the summer of 1991. And because I trusted my husband, and didn’t yet know about his love of silly storytelling, I believed him without asking any questions.
Fast forward to the next spring. I’ve made it through the crazy hot summer and my first Kentucky winter. Snow and everything. My Arizona uncle called to ask if I’d watched the basketball game where Christian Laettner got the last-minute 3-point shot to help Duke win over Kentucky. We weren’t but sports watchers, especially not with a small black and white TV, but that one we saw. 🏀
A little while into our conversation, he noticed a tiny bit of an accent, so he turned the conversation to how I was getting used to Kentucky. When he asked how I was adjusting, I answered, “I guess I’m doing alright. I’ve been here almost a year, and I haven’t needed to get my lungs suctioned out.”
That’s when hubby started laughing really big. And he sputtered the words, “Wait; you believed that!?”
Since then, it’s been one of my funniest stories to share, even if it does make me seem a bit airheaded. 😁 But you best believe that I now check everything—even from trusted sources. Lol 😂
Note: I never believed fish moved in with fluid on the lungs, but because this is a light-hearted true story, I prompted Wombo to add fish to both the lungs and the suction tank. 🐠 🐟
